Five Minute Friday – Relevant

To those who like to journal…

A fellow blogger over at The Gypsy Mama has a Friday tradition and I like it!

“For fun, for love of the sound of words, for play, for delight, for joy and celebration of the art of communication…  For only five short, bold, beautiful minutes. Unscripted and unedited. We just write without worrying if it’s just right or not.”

It is a choice word in today’s Christian circles.  Relevant.  It’s the thing to be.  It’s the way to relate.  It’s the MO of our churches and ministries.  It’s important.  I truly believe it.  What really steams my rice, though, is when relevancy strays it’s feet across the line of conformity or swims quietly over to comfort… because there was NOTHING conformist or comfortable about what Jesus did, nor in what He asks us to do.  How can we be relevant and still rage against the machine of conformity, live our lives as transformed, not loose ourselves in the “look of it all”?  I think we daily figure out who we are, who and what defines us, and dive into the deep end with those around us knowing what to rely on to keep us afloat.  Because we are relevant to those we love because we listen, we laugh, cry, sit, run, and do a happy dance with them.  That is relevant.  Loving others more than self is relevant.  It’s also transforming, counter-cultural, uncomfortable, and difficult.

…and that’s 5.

  See you next time,

  1. I’m so glad to have stumbled upon your site tonight, and am so thankful that you’re sharing your heart and your thoughts here. Yes, we are relevant not because of any striving or effort or external measures, but because this love planted and growing in us – the water that quenches thirst – in the listening & laughing & crying alongside. Thank you.

    1. I just read your Gratitude 5MF and I have to say that I am really glad you stumbled upon my site too b/c I would not have found yours and I am very excited to read more! Thanks so much for your kind words.

  2. Welcome to the 5-Minute Friday experience and thank you for visiting my blog as well. I, too, fear that Relevant is coming to mean watered down in some circles. And certainly Jesus was never that. I look forward to reading more from you!

  3. Fabulous and spot-on. Hearing the term ‘relevant’ in churches makes my skin crawl, because now it seems to mean, “let’s operate like the world”.

    Good thought flow! 🙂

    1. Yeah, I hope nobody misunderstands me here. I think it’s vitally important to be relevant and that Jesus was piercingly relevant to his culture and those he encountered, he just didn’t make choices based upon them or anything other than what the Father said or did. Nice to see you here! Loved your post as well.

  4. “Because we are relevant to those we love because we listen, we laugh, cry, sit, run, and do a happy dance with them… Loving others more than self is relevant.” Powerful words. Well done!

  5. AMEN!!!!!!
I love it…That is what Aaron did at the base of the mountain while Moses was up hanging out with God… aaron gave the people what they wanted…he pandered to the people… Instead of everyone just waiting on the Lord… they were off doing their own thing.
Oh high five you and a thousand angels, lol.. you hit it girl…we need more of you!
